The following telegram appeared in the North China Daily News of 17th December, dated 16th December from Hong Kong

under the heading" Canton a City of the Dead "G-

"A city of the dead' describes the condition of Canton

after the suppression of the Communist uprising. Photo=

graphs secured of the ruthless slaughter show goods trucks

loaded with bodies of Communists piled three and four hiĥ driven off the public thorough-fares for burial. In

other places long rows of dead line the sides of the

streets-gruesome evidence of the vengeance of the anti- reads. Gun-boats played a very important part in the . suppression of the uprising. Under cover of their fire, General Li Fuk-lam's troops rushed from Honan in steam- launches, landed at t e extreme ends of the Bund and surrounded the reds, whom eye-witnesses declare to have been directed by Russians

A telegram from Hong Kong dated 17th December says: "Thousands of refugees of all classes continue to pour into HongKong daily, every steamer from Canton being crowded to her utmost capacity with Chinese passengers. The police here are arresting all persons suspected of

being implicated in the recent disorders in Canton, and already 300 have been taken into custody. Some 6 them are being deported to Canton, while others are being detained pending investigation. With the assistance of detectives from Canton, 25 persons have been identified as prominent Red leaders and their adherents. These are being extra= dited to Canton.
